    Broxbourne in Hertfordshire was inhabited by the Romans in 43 AD. We know this because of several Roman roads were found which lead to the town and it’s location on Watling Street. The town is named after the River Brox, which flows through it. The name “Broxborne” was first mentioned in 1193, but this could be a corruption of an earlier form: “Broccesburne”, from “Brocc” meaning badger and “burna” for brook or stream; hence a badger brook, referring to its position near the river.
